‘’My name is Izehema and I am 50 years old. I am a single mother of 8 kids, their ages range from 15 to 30 years old. All my kids work, except for the youngest one who is still at school. None of my kids is involved in fishing. Thanks to all the activities I am involved in, I am able to provide for them. I started working in Mtwapa Beach Management Unit (BMU) in 2014, and currently I manage many different activities related to small-scale fishery: I am a fish trader, meaning that I buy fish from fishermen to then sell it to clients; I own 3 fishing boats that I rent out to fishermen, and I own a small fish restaurant nearby the BMU. I also own a small property that I rent to tourists or friends. I started working in the BMU by selling fish; then I managed then to ask and obtain a loan through a bank, and I decided to invest it to buy my first boat. I started renting out the boat to fishermen that would pay me a small amount to use it to go fishing. This purchase proved to be very profitable for me: not only I managed to pay back my first loan, but I was also able to buy two additional boats to be rented and to start my other businesses.’’
''Mi chiamo Izehema e ho 50 anni. Sono una madre single di 8 bambini che hanno tra i 15 e i 30 anni. Lavorano tutti tranne il più giovane, che va ancora a scuola. Nessuno dei miei figli si occupa di pesca. Grazie a tutte attività che gestisco riesco a mantenere la mia famiglia. Ho iniziato a lavorare nella cooperativa di Mtwapa nel 2014, e attualmente gestisco diverse attività legate alla pesca artigianale: sono una rivenditrice di pesce, nel senso che acquisto pesce dai pescatori e lo rivendo a diversi clienti. Ho 3 barche che noleggio ai pescatori e gestisco un piccolo ristorante di pesce qui nelle vicinanze. Ho anche una piccola proprietà che affitto a turisti o amici. Ho iniziato a lavorare nella cooperativa vendendo pesce; poi sono riuscita a chiedere ed ottenere un prestito tramite una banca, e ho deciso di investirlo per acquistare la mia prima barca. Ho iniziato ad affittare la barca a pescatori che mi pagavano una piccola somma per andare a pescare. Questo acquisto si è rivelato molto redditizio per me: non solo sono riuscita a ripagare il mio primo prestito, ma sono anche riuscita ad acquistare altre due barche da noleggiare e avviare le altre attività.''
IZEHEMA vive a Mtwapa, villaggio situato nella contea di Kilifi a 15 km a nord di Mombasa. L'iniziativa “Go Blue” finanziata dall’Unione Europea e realizzata da Aics insieme a CIHEAM Bari, interviene a Kilifi per rafforzare la filiera della pesca, fornendo sostegno diretto alla cooperativa di pescatori di Mtwapa, dove lavora Mwarua. Gli interventi a favore della cooperativa includono la realizzazione di attività di formazione, l’acquisto di imbarcazioni, strumenti ed equipaggiamenti per la pesca, la riabilitazione del mercato del pesce, il miglioramento della catena del freddo, l'installazione di equipaggiamenti informatici per migliorare l’attività di analisi dati relativi alla pesca, e l'introduzione di un sistema di certificazione che attesti standard qualitativi definiti per il pescato, che permetterà ai pescatori di migliorarne la commercializzazione.
IZEHEMA lives in Mtwapa, a village located in Kilifi County, 15 km north of Mombasa. The "Go Blue" initiative funded by the European Union and implemented by Aics together with CIHEAM Bari intervenes in Kilifi to strengthen the fishery value chain through the provision of direct support to the Mtwapa Beach Management Unit, where Mwarua works. The interventions in favor of the cooperative include the realization of training activities, the provision of boats, tools and fishing equipment, the rehabilitation of the fish market, the improvement of the cold chain, the installation of IT equipment to improve data analysis related to fishing, and the introduction of a labelling scheme certifying defined quality standards along the value chain, which will increase the fish products' value and will allow fishermen to improve their marketing.
